Test Procedure and Registration

4. Take the test (in the format you prefer)
Regardless of which format test you choose, you need to purchase online and then you will receive a receipt via email as soon as you sign up.
ONLINE FORMAT TEST INSTRUCTIONS ($28.90 test)
- If you sign up for the fully online test, you will receive email information on self-registration for the online proctoring service
- Check your email spam folder
- Email support@avantassessment.com if you have not received the self-registration link (include receipt, 8am-7pm M-F)
- If you sign up for the fully online test, you will receive email with your login information and a link to access the system
- Check your email spam folder
- Email support@avantassessment.com if you have not received the login information
- Log in and set up a profile
- Select a date and time for test (make sure test is at least one week before UNC Charlotte’s registration drop/add ends)
- Log back into the system to check date/time confirmation for your test
- Take the test (allow approximately one hour)
- Note: While the sample test includes listening and speaking sections, the test itself does NOT require or include those portions.
IN-PERSON FORMAT TEST INSTRUCTIONS ($13.90 test)
- If you sign up for the in-person test, Check the scheduled test dates in the LRC (Mebane Hall 434) and choose which one to attend:

- August 26 (Monday) (Last day to add/drop): 9:05-9:55 am
- September 10 (Tuesday): 8:30- 9:20 am
- September 18 (Wednesday): 1:25-2:15 pm
- October 16 (Wednesday): 9:05-9:55 am
- October 17 (Thursday) (Last day to withdraw): 10:00-10:50 am
- October 23 (Wednesday): 1:25-2:15 pm
- October 24 (Thursday): 11:30 am-12:20 pm
- October 28 (Monday) (Registration begins)
- October 29 (Tuesday): 2:30-3:20 pm
- October 31 (Thursday): 11:30am-12:20pm
- November 4 (Monday): 10:10-11:00 am
- November 12 (Tuesday): 8:30- 9:20 am
- November 20 (Wednesday): 9:05-9:55 am
- December 2 (Monday): 10:10-11:00 am
- During the Summer all Placement Tests are online
- All test takers need to be done by the end of one hour if taking the test in person
- You do not need to register for a time slot, simply choose the best time of those offered to attend
- Come to 434 of Mebane Hall on main campus of UNC Charlotte 10 minutes before the test time (The seating is first-come, first-serve)
- Bring student ID card or digital ID
- Computers will be provided
- You will be given the login information and monitored while you take the test
- The test is not timed, and can be paused and resumed at a later time, if needed. On average, test takers can plan to spend 35-50 minutes taking the test.
- Do not use outside resources during the test – no pen, paper, other software applications, or support materials.
- Your test will include two or three skills -depending on the language selected, as follows:
- Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Japanese, Spanish – Reading, Contextualized Grammar and Writing
- Italian – Reading and Writing
- The test location will provide a computer and internet access
- The test starts with a Student Profile page and then a self-evaluation. The test will flow in the following order: Reading/grammar section, Writing section
- For more information about the test itself, you may read this guide. Please note that the technology will be taken care of by the proctors and some of the guidelines will not apply to our versions of the test. For example, we do not currently offer a placement test for Arabic.

5. Wait to find out results:
- You will receive an email notifying you of your level proficiency on the Friday after you take the test (However, we will process scores much more frequently in the days leading up to the add/drop deadline)
- Your level proficiency will also be entered as a note in CONNECT
- The email about your results will be the exact same wording and information as that entered on your CONNECT
- If you have questions after receiving the email, you may contact a language advisor
- For help with placement after the score appears on your DegreeWorks contact your advisor
